Thank You Translink

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Well folks Translink is definitely on the side of my health, yesterday the usual happens I was just about to cross the street and sure enough the 17 went by. I knew that I was going to be getting a ride home but still didn’t feel like going all the way to Broadway considering the torrential downpour we were experiencing yesterday morning. I did it anyways and by the time I got to work I was soaked, I took my jacket off and it looked like I’d just spilled a whole glass of water down the front of my shirt. We’ve only had one umbrella since our last one went missing (while Simon was using it) and so he left first and took it with him. Today after work I got myself a cheap one from the dollar store so we don’t have any excuses now (he gets the cheap one as he lost the the last one, hehe).

This morning I gave in as I was able to get across the street just as the bus was pulling up so I took it. Then on the way home I figured I had to make up for this morning and got off the bus one stop early, had a look around the pet shop and then headed home. Now had I known that I was really going to have to pee as soon as I got off the bus I wouldn’t have but oh well. It made it a little tougher but walking the extra block and a half felt good.

We’re doing good, keep it up.

Up with the birds

Friday, September 30th, 2005

There has been no walking in my world for the past couple days, other than the usual walking to work. I got stuck in the rain yesterday at Robson & Jervis because the air compressor on the bus broke. If it hadn’t been peeing rain I would have just walked to work from there. It would have been about a 15 block walk or something like that. But alas, the weather didn’t permit it. I would have been a soaking mess by the time I had gotten to work, and I probably would’ve caught a cold. No, thanks!

One thing that has been shifting a bit for me in the past couple days is my willingness to eliminate certain foods from my world that give me trouble. You know those kinds of foods where you have one and automatically you want to have another? Or those kinds of foods where you get really irritated or pouty if you can’t have at least one everyday? I call those my ‘trigger foods’. I have a great big list of them. I’ve known for a long time that if I want to move beyond just maintaining my weight, I have to let those foods go, at least for a little while. I can’t think in terms of forever or I just freak out and sabotage myself before I even get started; I try to keep reminding myself that it is just one day, one moment at a time.

So what I plan to do, maybe even this morning while I have a spare hour or so here at work this morning, is review that list of trigger foods and start thinking about what a day without those foods would be like. Not the rest of my life; but just for a day. Hopefully one day will turn into two, and two into three, and so on, until I start to see that downward shift!

Wish me luck!

Even in the Rain, we walk

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

Well I’ve been a little slack on the walking the last day or two, sort of. This afternoon I headed off to work and amazingly I get around the corner and no bus just going by. I decided to wait for it and skip the long walk today. Now according the last couple of days another bus should be along in about 5 minutes (the time it takes to walk to Broadway). Nope because I decided to wait it out it took 11 minutes today. Translink definitely hates me.

After work I got to go to the CSS Presentation with Lindsay and therefore I didn’t have my usual after work walk, BUT, Youl dropped us off about two blocks away from where we were supposed to go so we had to walk that. The first block was fine then we rounded the corner to go up Granville to discovered it’s got a nice little incline to it, unlike the little imaginary one in front of our place. I made it, a little bit of puffing at the end but stuff like that isn’t classified as a major crisis like it used to be. Then after we got let into the building just to top it off, we had to go up a flight of stairs.

Linz and I agreed that this made up for missing my usual after work walk.

I’ve decided on another little goal for myself, well two of them maybe. One is that I should always do the long walk to the bus stop (I end up waiting anyways so why not) and two I’m going to try getting off the bus one stop ahead of where I normally do, which makes it three blocks to home, not just a half of one. I thought of this goal a while ago but didn’t feel I was ready yet. I think my body has gotten used to the regular route and it’s time to add a little bit of a challenge.

Water

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Hi my two daughters – today I did it – drank a whole bottle of water. (500 ml) Last sip at 9:06. I want to drink 1 bottle a day for one week and increase to 2 the following week. Still no mars Bars but 4 peanut butter cookies at the centre. I worked for it. I may have a Mars Bar this weekend, it’s the weekend you know but maybe not. Made an apple pie and ate only one piece. I keep thinking that what I have to report in this Blog is seen by you both and I have to be good, kindof. I haven’t started my program for a long walk up Domano – but I will – Too many bear sighting yet – and I don’t think bells are going to work. I will keep you posted as to what is happening

Wow

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

I’m still amazed that even with just the three of us I get more posts and comments then I ever did on my regular weblog.

Anyhow, I’ve come to the conclusion that translink hates me. Yesterday as usual the bus went by just as I got to where I could see it. I wasn’t really feeling up to it but decided to to the long walk to Broadway anyways and sure enough 5 minutes later another bus went by. That never happened when I was waiting for the buses. I’m glad that I’m doing the long walks and plan to keep them up but it just drives me nuts that it now seems they run the buses more frequently.

Oh Well, I also volunteered to take the deposit to the bank yesterday so that was an extra couple of blocks, which made up for the fact that I got a ride home from my class last night.

That’s it for yesterday, will post more tonight when I get back.

Boost that metabolism

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

Here’s some great basic strategies I found for boosting metabolism. Again they’re pretty common sense, but a good reminder on how to keep that scale number moving in a downward motion! :D I know for me sometimes I skip a meal here and there, especially on the weekends. I rarely have breakfast. So this is a nice reminder that not eating enough, just as much as overeating, can cause weight gain if we are already struggling with trying to keep our weight down. I also like how they suggest carrying groceries as a strength-building exercise! It’s the little things like that which we take for granted; so keep track of your trips to the grocery store! They count too! Yay!

Strategy #1: Begin with Breakfast
Your body has gone without food for at least 8 hours – and it’s starving. Skipping breakfast keeps your body in “starvation mode” and slows down your metabolism so you don’t burn any needed calories. A morning meal revs up your metabolism and keeps your body burning fat all day.

Strategy #2: Stop Starving
Skipping meals and eating too little actually lowers your metabolism. Cutting too many calories puts you in a fasting state, which causes your body to hold on to fat and calories to survive. This drastically decreases your metabolism and makes it much harder for you to lose weight.

Strategy #3: Small Meals for a Big Boost
Eating smaller, more frequent meals provides a steady source of energy to your body, which boosts your metabolism and increases your energy throughout the day. By eating five to six small meals instead of three large ones, your body burns calories as you go, rather than storing the extra as fat.

Strategy #4: Burn Calories with Cardio
Cardiovascular exercise raises your metabolism and helps your body burn fat. Any exercise that gets your heart pumping, from aerobics to walking to vacuuming, gives you calorie-burning benefits that last all day.

Strategy #5: Muscle Matters
Muscle burns more calories than fat. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism gets and the more calories you burn, even at rest! Try to strength train two to three times a week. This is as easy as lifting light weights or even carrying groceries!

Drink it!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

Another cool tip from my e-mail! (I got a zillion of these, so watch out!) This probably isn’t something you guys don’t already know, but I thought I would just put it here anyway since drinks are something I am stuggling with in particular at the moment. Sometimes we need a little reminder when our common sense is failing us! :D

Did you know that one of the most common reasons for fatigue is mild dehydration? If you have a hard time keeping track of how many glasses of water you consume, fill a 1-liter bottle of water twice over the course of the day. Add a slice of lemon, lime, orange, or add a splash of 100% fruit juice for zest!

Measure it!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

I got this cool tip in my e-mail today.

Invest in a kitchen scale, measuring cups and spoons. These tools will help ensure that you’re not overeating. Managing portions is critical when it comes to losing or maintaining weight. Learn how to estimate how much you should be eating by accurately measuring your food and before long, you’ll be able to “eyeball” the amount you need.

That sounds like a good idea. My mind always plays tricks on me when I’m dishing up my food — especially when the dish includes pasta! I may think I’m not eating too much, but if I were to look up how much I should be eating as opposed to how much I actually serve myself, I’m sure I’d see a big difference most of the time.

Hope that tip helps!

Bear Country

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

This morning I went for my usual walk with Duke and Sandy but there was a lot of fog. My neighbourgh on Julliard Cres. stopped me and told me there was a great big black bear wandering around the neighbourhood and she thought it was wandering at night. I wasn’t really happy to hear this so decided to make it a very short walk. Around JdB and then Kingley and then cut throught the short park. Found bear droppings and thought what now? So my walks will have to be befor or right after supper when there are more people around and cars and lots of noise. Even with 2 dogs, I am not very brave. I am glad Simon went for a walk with you Michelle, because in Vancouver you have 2 legged bears, so you be careful. Glad to see Lindsay in Blogga and will keep reading and passing on comments. My family is growing.

One More Day, One More Walk

Monday, September 26th, 2005

Well I promised Mom that I would go for a walk today seeing as it was my day off and wouldn’t get my daily to and from the bus exercise, and I did it.

It was 11:30 at night and was for fifteen minutes but I got my butt off the computer chair and went out to get today’s copy of 24hrs then took the long way home.

I took Simon with me, he gets a fair amount of walking during the day but I don’t think he was too keen on me walking out there alone at 11:30 at night. Normally I take a break at the bus stop but tonight I skipped it and walked right by. My back was a little sore by the time we got back home but it felt good to have made the effort.
